Patent Acquisition for Optimal Battery Control Technology Enabling 24/7 Carbon-Free Electricity Supply

JERA Cross Inc., a subsidiary of JERA Co., Inc., is pleased to announce that it has obtained a patent (Patent No. 7678926; hereinafter referred to as “the Patent”) for an optimal battery control technology aimed at enabling 24/7 carbon-free electricity supply.

In recent years, the use of renewable energy has been advancing as part of global efforts to address climate change. Internationally, the need to achieve 24/7 carbon-free energy—the continuous supply of carbon-free electricity throughout the day and year—has been increasingly emphasized, and initiatives toward this goal are expanding.

In response to these trends, our company has been promoting efforts to realize 24/7 carbon-free electricity, including the commercial use of zero-emission thermal power generation powered solely by hydrogen—the first of its kind in Japan.

One of the greatest challenges in realizing and delivering 24/7 carbon-free electricity lies in the variability of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, which are heavily influenced by weather conditions and time of day. To ensure a stable electricity supply, it is essential to efficiently and reliably supplement the shortfall between renewable energy output and demand using dispatchable power sources.
To address this challenge, we have been advancing technological development, and in January 2025, we obtained a patent for a new electricity supply system. This system combines demand forecasting, renewable energy generation forecasting, and optimal control of dispatchable power sources to enable stable and efficient power delivery.

The newly acquired patent covers a battery charge/discharge control technology designed to support 24/7 carbon-free electricity supply. This technology enables the optimal control of battery charging and discharging to both meet the required volume of carbon-free electricity and maximize electricity trading revenue.
In addition, the system allows for the tracking and management of how much of the battery’s charging power and remaining capacity is derived from carbon-free electricity. Through this optimization and management, the system supports the stable supply of 24/7 carbon-free electricity while complementing the intermittency of renewable energy sources. It also enables low-environmental-impact electricity supply even during nighttime or cloudy and rainy conditions, contributing to the realization of a sustainable, decarbonized society.

※1 “24/7 (twenty-four seven) carbon-free electricity” refers to electricity that is free of CO₂ emissions every hour of every day, i.e., 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. In accordance with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Guidelines for Electricity Retail Business, this term denotes that 100% of the electricity demand is met using zero-emission power sources—such as renewable energy and hydrogen power generation facilities—along with the environmental value provided through the use of non-fossil certificates.Please note that this does not imply that no CO₂ emissions occur throughout the entire lifecycle, including fuel production and transportation.
